First day of Filming

The first day of filming for our music video consisted of the shots of Shelby looking "unpopular" to prepare for that I helped get Shelby ready. I provided the props and costume for Shelby's character, she wore no makeup as we decided that an unpopular pupil would be less likely to wear make up. I was in charge of her outfit so I decided on giving her a long floral "granny" dress and I did her hair so that she had two high pigtails and she wore glasses to complete the look. This look was created with the use of certain with certain key words in mind: unpopular, unfashionable, childish and outcast.

When filming started we did some shots of Shelby and me in school showing us as friends, this will mostly be used as extra footage in case of an emergency as Eastbrook schools interior is not the best and we didn't like the backgrounds of these shots. We used a variety of different shots incorporating close ups and mid shots. We did some performance based shots of Shelby against a black and white backgrounds. We also did some shots showing Shelby's character getting bullied in order to properly establish her as an "unpopular" kid. We did some shots of her doing maths equations and getting paper thrown at her head, and a shot of Shelby being pushed over this shows her as the target of bullying.

Later that say we changed location and we filmed in Shelby's bedroom to shoot the make over scene. In this Scene I do Shelby's make up showing her transformation from "unpopular" to "cool kid". At this stage Shelby has her makeup done nicely and changes into a more fashionable red dress.

Production Meeting 4

As part of the pre production process we had to have production meetings as part of our production team. During these meetings we utilised the time using it to discuss and plan how we were going to proceed with making our music video. In this meeting we brainstormed some ideas for our digipak and advert.
We agreed it would be a good idea to take pictures as went along filming so that Shelby could appear on the digipak in some of the same outfits that she wore while we were filming this would later help us to link the digipak to the music video.
While discussing ideas we thought about maybe incorporating some images of journal entries for Shelby's character somewhat inspired by the "burn book" from mean girls. Although we decided to scrap this idea as when we tried experimenting with creating journal entries we found that they looked sloppy and didn't fit with the feel of our digipak.

Instead we looked for inspiration elsewhere and we came across Adele's music video "Send my love". We found that we really enjoyed the effect of the overlaid images used in this music video and decided we wanted to incorporate this into our digipak images. For this I thought it would be effective to have multiple layers on top of one and other and drop the opacity down so that the back layers would fade through into the foreground. We also discussed colour selections for the background layers. We decided that in order to link the layers to the music video we would use the key colours from the music video in our digipak. These colours red and green are very important in our music video for representing the change in Shelby's character from unpopular to popular as such we would use them to tint the background layers of our digipak.

For the advert we decided to try and take some professional looking calculated model shots of Shelby as it would allow our advert to look much more realistic and like a real advert. We decided on using a white background and experimenting with different poses for Shelby to do in order to judge which would be the most effective. We also discussed ideas for costume that Shelby would wear for this shoot, deciding to incorporate colour scheme and the school theme from our music video. We did this by dressing Shelby in a burgundy red shirt that represents the colour of popular Shelby, and a grey check skirt that was used to represent Shelby as a student and the unpopular Shelby.

Production meeting 3

As part of the pre production process we had to have production meetings as part of our production team. During these meetings we utilised the time using it to discuss and plan how we were going to proceed with making our music video. In this meeting we went on a location recce visiting a number of different areas to see which would be suitable for us to use for our music video.

We took trips to both Lakeside and Romford in order to assess which would be the most effective setting for our music video. This allowed us to weigh the pros and cons of both settings and ultimately decide on which to use for our final music video. After visiting both shopping centres we all decided that Lakeside would be the better filming location as it was a bigger space and had better lighting sources than Romford which would give us better shots while filming. Also Lakeside had a bigger variety of shops so we would have more places to choose from on the day of filming. However once we had decided on Lakeside we went back to make a plan of what shops to use to shoot our footage in. We made the assessments based on which shops would allow us to film in them and which would have a  problem and disrupt our filming process. We agreed this was a necessary process as it would help with our time management on the day of filming allowing us to stay on track and not to go off schedule due to being kicked out off shops for filming.

We also agreed to have shots in school to show Shelby as a student so we took a day to assess which of our schools Robert Clack and Eastbrook would be effective for which shots. We decided that Robert Clack would be more effective for some of the classroom and corridor shots we had discussed and that Eastbrook would be a good choice for some shots showing Shelby as an unpopular kid. We found a space in the corner of our common room that we thought would be effective at showing Shelby as an outcast as it was in the corner by a bin showing that Shelby is in an undesirable place in her life and that she has been discarded by her peers as rubbish.

Production meeting 2

As part of the pre production process we had to have production meetings as part of our production team. During these meetings we utilised the time using it to discuss and plan how we were going to proceed with making our music video. In this second meeting we discussed researching other similar music videos in order to draw inspiration that we could transfer over to our own music video. We needed to do this as we had filmed some footage and we had a rough idea about what direction we wanted to go in for our music video but we needed some more specific ideas about what is effective and what would work in our music video. We made a rough plan as to what shots we were going to film and when we were going to film them and discussed coming up with a shooting schedule. In addition to filming new footage we also discussed what we could do with our existing footage in order to display it to the best of it's potential.

We put together a plan for our next production meeting to go on a location recce in order to figure out the best locations to film at. We also began discussing plans on what needed to be done for the magazine advert and the digipak.

At this stage we thought it was a good idea to establish our group roles.

Sarah - My role in the marketing process for the song was to create the magazine advert and the digipak. It's going to be my job to edit all of the pictures on photoshop, organise all of the images and select the most effective ones and to make creative decisions about what would work best to market the song, and to link the promotional package to the ideas for our music video.

Louis- Louis' role was editing the music video, creating a basic rough cut and then creating the finished music video.

Shelby- Shelby's role is to assist both me and Louis with our jobs and to give creative input and suggest any changes that should be made.

Production Meeting 1

As part of the pre production process we had to have production meetings as part of our production team. During these meetings we utilised the time using it to discuss and plan how we were going to proceed with making our music video. In this first meeting we discussed plans to film talking about filming dates and making a schedule as we all needed to be available and we found that a lot of us had conflicting schedules which meant it was cruicial that we organise specific times to film. We also began to plan the details of each location and what scenes would need to be filmed when and who needed to be involved, what props/costumes where needed and what equipment we would need for each day of filming. When discussing locations we were torn deciding which shopping centre to use Romford or Lakeside, in the end we decided on Lakeside. Although Romford was closer Lakeside was bigger and we decided this would look better for our music video. We also had to spend some time deciding which school to film at as we are based at two different schools in the end we decided to film at both in order to get the most amount of footage and also to and some vareity to the school in our film.
